A Minimum Pressure Valve (MPV) is a pressure-regulating valve that maintains a minimum pressure in a system, often used in rotary screw air compressors to ensure proper lubrication and protect the air-oil separator. At startup, the MPV is closed to allow pressure to build; once a preset minimum is reached, it opens to allow airflow while its built-in check valve prevents backflow at shutdown, ensuring consistent system operation and longevity.
How it Works
Startup: When the compressor starts, the valve is closed, allowing pressure to build within the air-oil separator.
Opening: As system pressure increases, it overcomes the spring force in the valve, causing it to open.
Full Flow: At normal operating pressure, the valve opens fully, allowing the compressor's output to pass through with minimal pressure loss.
Shutdown: If the system pressure drops below the preset minimum, the valve closes.
Check Valve Function: A separate, integrated check valve then closes to prevent air from flowing backward into the compressor during shutdown.
Key Functions
Oil Lubrication:
The MPV establishes a minimum pressure required for lubricating oil circulation in the compressor.
Component Protection:
It prevents compressor damage and ensures the air-oil separator functions correctly by avoiding excessively low pressure.
Smooth Operation:
By maintaining a stable pressure, the MPV prevents issues like cavitation and contributes to the smooth operation of hydraulic and air systems.
Symptoms of a Faulty MPV
Low oil pressure or low temperatures.
Odd compressor noises.
System instability or inefficienc
